Theater of the Mind - Ludacris

November 28, 2008 | Author: Rhydian H.M.

“Last of a Dying Breed” co-stars Lil’ Wayne and turns up the lyrical energy and cadence of the album. With a high tempo and verbose flow, they deliver a plethora of punch lines, spewed out on top of a bumping beat and melody that has momentous feel; hijacking your attention and temporarily making everything else in your life feel less important than point of the track.

What Ludacris really wants to tell you is that “I’m a lyricist to the death and I got what ya need”, “we almost extinct” and ultimately “MCs move the crowd”. Lil Wayne drops a memorable rhyme to come in with “I’m an MC, I move the crowd like Moses; Like the Red Sea, I wear red like roses” and doesn’t stop there with “Never had a holster, I keep it on my lap; and Hip Hop ain’t dead, it just had a heart attack”.

“I Do It For Hip Hop” is a cool track as Ludacris is joined by Nas and Jaz in paying tribute to the industry on top of a classic hip hop beat featuring classic scratches. Ludacris puts himself within measuring range of the other two renowned lyricists and fairs well, as they each trade their flow rather than tandem.

Ludacris takes the opening verse “Now this is what they call poetry in motion” followed by “I do it with the beat box, I did it from the start” and “And since nine years old I did it for hip-hop”. Then Nas takes over to rap “They say I’m so low key, I’m socially awkward”, continuing “I’m as live as a hive full of predators” and “It’s like rap, some just buzz, some will attack”. Finally Jay Z steps in with “Hip-hop! Started out in the park”, adding “I used to rap to impress my friends” and “I prolly never woulda stopped, thank God for hip-hop”.

“Theater of Mind” is rammed with super stars as Ludacris often takes a supporting role on his movie concept album. With a number of cool and interesting tracks, the album provides another compilation of entertainment from the “King of the South”.
