Second Season - Unk

“Second Season” is southern based DJ/rapper Unk’s sophomore album, following his successful debut LP production “Beat’n Down Yo Block” (2006), which included the hit singles “Walk it Out” in particular and “2 Step”. “Second Season” features Ying Yang Twins, Three 6 Mafia and Sean Kingston amongst others and was predominantly produced by fellow southern DJ Montay.
As you could expect from DJ Montay after his work on Flo Rida’s “Low”, the album includes a number of great beats, such as those early on in “On My S**t” and in Unk’s first single “Show Out”, which is all about getting jiggy.
Moving further in, “Second Season” builds up several similar sounds to those previously, such as in “Wet Wet”, Unk’s second single “In Yo Face”, “Where My Ladies At” and the final track “Make You Move”, which leaves a slight sense of familiarity throughout.
There’s welcome departure in “She Freaky”, which differentiates itself by having a catchy beat and vocal variety from guest Ray J, as well as in “You Can Do It”, which has a positive message accompanied by moments of cheerful beat. A highlight of “Second Season” is the track “You’re The One”, which combines lyrical seduction derived from “Let me lick you up and down”, with reggae from guest Sean Kingston, before and after UNK raps over a deep base beat.
“Second Season” was released on November 4 and has the potential to match the success of “Beat’n Down Yo Block”, with at least a handful of great sounding tracks that you’re sure to be playing for a good while.
