Droppin’ Science Fiction - The Mighty Underdogs

“Droppin’ Science Fiction” is the album from hip hop “supergroup” The Mighty Underdogs, made up of emcees Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Lateef from Latryx; and producer Headnodic. All three bring underground Hip Hop together for a mixture of mainly groovy or comical flavors, themed around sci-fi, rather than overly hard themes that can be found in their individual works.
Gift of the Gab and Latryx barely go all out to achieve lyrical mastery on this album, rather to deliver enjoyable if not only funny tracks, such as in “Ill Vacation” which has a cool, hippy beat and ends with an weird and amusing “we are all muts” speech.
“Laughing At You” is another example of a funny track, where some poor soul is the subject of constant jokes. Headnodic produces an excellent compilation of sounds, seamlessly providing and switching from funky or weird moods, to giggly.
Some of the earlier tracks to mention include the hard hitting “Gunfight”, featuring MF Doom, who brings good rhymes for the threatening content; “Hands in the Air”, a short track with a feel-good beat and excellent word play; and “Science Fiction”, a storytelling tack which stands out as having has a crazy beat carrying a “How Do U Want It” (Tupac) flavor with “Gatman And Robbin” (50 Cent ft. Eminem) on top.
Nearing the end, “UFC Remix” is a fantastic listen, featuring DJ Shadow cutting and blending tracks and the final track “Victorious”, where the emcees reflect on their success with cool word play on top of another feel-good beat.
“Droppin’ Science Fiction” was released on October 14 and is a production with a number of fun tracks that you’ll enjoy even more the second time you listen.
