Interview With Yung B Da Producer

January 7, 2009 | Author: OfficiallyHipHop

New Jersey producer Yung B has been creating beats and producing albums ever since he was 11 years old. Yung B enjoys listening to 2pac, Nas and Jay-Z in his spare time, and would eventually like to create some music for movie scores or video games. He just finished producing his cousin J.Nolan’s mixtape “The Up-Bringing 2.0″ and has been working on a possible instrumental release.

Your name is Yung B Da Producer. How did this name originate?
Yung B: Well it started off when I was 15 years old and I made my first official beat CD that was great enough to get a lot of buzz. So I figured I better come up with something since I had  a talent that I could pursue. My first name is Brandon so that’s where the “B” came from. Of course it’s not a out of this world clever name but it fit me and my image pretty good.

Can you describe a little bit of your hometown Newark “Brick City” New Jersey?
Yung B: I was actually born originally in Alabama and then moved to Jersey when I was 4 years old. So it was basically everything I knew. I neva really knew the south, let alone Alabama like dat, even though its my birthplace. But man, “Brick City” is just a crazy environment. Anything can happen at any moment. I lived in places like “Harlem” and “Brooklyn” and just New York period and its crazy there too, but it’s just something about Jersey [that's] different. That’s my home so I just love everything about it.

But I also learned my home can become my enemy as far as environment wise. Many people don’t make it out, a lot of people have talent but choose different ways to go about it and that’s if they choose to go about it. We have talent like Redman, Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature. I just think that not only is Newark slept on, but New Jersey as a whole. Hopefully I can do something about it.

You’ve been producing since you were 11 years old. How did you first get started as a producer?
Yung B: Well actually it’s crazy because I been listening to music since I can ever remember. I always listen to 70’s soul and classical music Hip-Hop and even country. I listen to anything that catches my attention and I noticed that I just so happen to listen to it more than playing games as a young child. I remember telling my Ma Dukes that I wanted to Rap and when I was 10, she told me well spit something. I couldn’t [and] the words wouldn’t come out. Long story short, the next year one of my mans tossed me the first version of fruityloops known now as FL Studio and I fell in love with it and been doing it ever since.

What are some of your favorite producers and how have they influenced your work?
Yung B: RZA, J.Dilla, Pete Rock, Just Blaze, Kanye West, Madlib…..these are people I felt had an effect on not only the production side but music overall. Most importantly, “Versatility”, is what made me like these producers. Kanye is from the Midwest but can make any beat for any artist in any region. Just Blaze was really a good example for me, being that he is from Jersey like me. He was making soul sample beats for not only people up north but people down south and west coast to people overseas.
