Stroke of “Genius” Leads to Forgotten Music

September 16, 2008 | Author: OfficiallyHipHop

Does anyone remember back to 2006, when Jibbs released his second single, “King Kong” (feat. Chamillionaire), or maybe two more years further back to 2004 when J-Kwon released his biggest hit ever, “Tipsy”? And if you’re two for two (on remembering) these singles and want to remember just one more, why not go back to the year 2002 when Nelly released summer hit “Hot In Herre”.

So can you remember ‘em all?…I know I sure didn’t! (OK, just “King Kong”)

But thanks to the release of iTunes 8.0 and its included playlist generator entitled “Genius”, I can “discover songs in [my] library [I] never knew [I] had - and rediscover forgotten favorites”, according to Apple’s website.

The process is simple. First select a song in your music library and then select the Genius button. iTunes then does all the dirty work by searching your library and compiling a list of similar songs for you to listen to.

In the past, I had to spend hours browsing my huge music library, trying to search for all the songs that satisfied my musical craving for the day. But once my library approached 5,000 songs, the process of constantly browsing for similar songs, let alone trying to remember all the songs I did have, became so time consuming that I began to put iTunes on “shuffle” and kept working.

But not anymore!

So far I’ve had a new playlist everyday this past weekend and I’ve been more than impressed with all the music I am rediscovering in my library. I mean what could be wrong with refreshing your memory with songs from Eminem or Ludacris from back in the day?

Nothing, that is until Genius starts placing “Britney Spears” songs in my playlists. And once that happens, I’m back to how I rolled before Genius was around - making playlists by hand.

So, you think that this is a good thing then? Even when it plays songs from back in the day you’re embarassed to admit you liked (eh-hem, Spice Girls were hot back in the day, so please don’t hate… lol) I think that’s a good thing. It will remind you to delete some songs entirely from your computer. I mean really, why does anyone need those songs that you can’t stand any more taking up space on your hard drive/iPod? Seems like a win-win to me.
